Have you ever felt like God is distant or that your prayers are not being heard? And maybe gone as far as wondering if God is at all real because if He were He'd do something about your cause?

If that's you, read on...

For the next couple of days we are going to look at God's interaction with Moses when God called him to go back to Egypt and tell Pharaoh to let his people go. But before we see that interaction, I'd like to point out something that is often missed in this familiar story, namely, God's heartbreak over the suffering of His people and His resolve to deliver them.

Exodus 3

7 The Lord said, “I have indeed seen the misery of my people in Egypt. I have heard them crying out because of their slave drivers, and I am concerned about their suffering. 8 So I have come down to rescue them from the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them up out of that land into a good and spacious land, a land flowing with milk and honey... 9 And now the cry of the Israelites has reached me, and I have seen the way the Egyptians are oppressing them. 10 So now, go. I am sending you to Pharaoh to bring my people the Israelites out of Egypt.”

Did you notice that? God said:

"I have heard them crying out,""I am concerned about their suffering,""I have come down to rescue them,their cry "has reached me."

WOW how good is our God?!

He is not far, He is near.

He is not absent, He is present.

He is not idle, He's at work.

He is not insensitive, He is heartbroken.

I don't know what you might be going through right now, but God wants you to know that He hears your prayers, He feels your hurt, and He is doing something about it even when you cannot see it.

Stop! Feel His love! Give Him thanks!

Forgive me Lord for my moments of weakness when I think you are far away.

Forgive me Lord for being so blinded by my sorrows that I can't feel you close.

Forgive my self-centeredness which so easily numbs me from sensing your embrace.

Lord, please forgive me!

Here, I draw close to you, as you have drawn close to me.

Psalm 116

1 I love the Lord, for he heard my voice;
    he heard my cry for mercy.

2 Because he turned his ear to me,
    I will call on him as long as I live.

3 The cords of death entangled me,
    the anguish of the grave came over me;
    I was overcome by distress and sorrow.
4 Then I called on the name of the Lord:
    “Lord, save me!”

The Lord is gracious and righteous;
    our God is full of compassion.

6 The Lord protects the unwary;
    when I was brought low, he saved me.

Return to your rest, my soul,
    for the Lord has been good to you.

8 For you, Lord, have delivered me from death,
    my eyes from tears,
    my feet from stumbling,
9 that I may walk before the Lord
    in the land of the living.

The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob,

the God who called and empowered Moses to deliver His people from affliction,

the God who sent His Son to die to save us,

that same God is hearing your prayers right now.

He is the only one who will ever be able to say to you, "I will never leave you. I will never forsake you."

Don't let your tears blind you,

don't let your feelings choke you,

open your eyes,

open your ears,

God is near! Amen!
